The Aurora Congregation Project

  This is an Alaska Missionary Conference Missional Priority for Campus Ministry and Culture of the Call.  The UMC has, from our very beginnings, had a passion for education and learning.  Located within our Alaska Conference boundaries are an historically Methodist institution and several state institutions of higher education.  When we send our young people off to college at these schools, or to schools (on the campuses of UAF, UAA, APU, and AVTEC in Seward) and provide scholarships in many ways.  But we can and should do more!

The Coordinating Council of the Conference has approved the Aurora Congregation Project as one of our missional priorities for the next two years.  The Aurora Congregation Project encourages every church to promote higher education ministries and to help people hear God's call to representative ministries within the United Methodist Church.  Each congregation is challenged to do as many of the following as possible;

  • Receive a Special Day Offering for the United Methodist Student Day and encourage development of the Alaska Conference student scholarship program.
  • Maintain a contact list of all students in tcollege and seminary and encourage congregants to send "care packages" to the congregations students.
  • Support campus ministry programs in the AMC by hosting a fundraiser for one of the ministries.

  • Invite campus ministry leaders and students to provide pulpit supply, and publish news about the ministry in your local church newsletter.

  • Celebrate a "Call Sunday" when pastors will preach specifically about their own calls and remind the congregation that God may be calling them to representati8ve ministry as well.
